Connie Francis - Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

Connie Francis is the prototype for the female pop singer of today. At the height of her chart popularity in the late '50s and early '60s, Francis was unique as a female recording artist, amassing record sales equal to or surpassing those of many of her male contemporaries. Ultimately, she branched into other styles of music -- big band, country, ethnic, and more. She still challenges Madonna as the biggest-selling female recording artist of all time. Like Madonna, Concetta Rosemarie Franconero came from an Italian-American background. Francis started her music career at three, playing an accordion bought for her by her contractor father, George. Her father's dream was not for his daughter to become a star, but for Francis to become independent of men as an adult with her own accordion school of music. At age ten, she was accepted on Startime, a New York City television show that featured talented child singers and performers. The show had no one else who played an accordion. Its host, legendary TV talent scout Arthur Godfrey, had difficulty pronouncing her name and suggested something "easy and Irish," which turned into Francis. After three weeks on Startime, the show's producer and Francis' would-be manager advised her to dump the accordion and concentrate on singing. Francis performed weekly on Startime for four years. After being turned down by almost every record label she approached, 16-year-old Francis signed a record contract with MGM, only because one of the songs on her demo, "Freddy," also happened to be the name of the president's son. "Freddy" was released in June 1955 as the singer's first single. After a series of flop singles, on October 2, 1957 she undertook what was to be her last session for MGM. Francis had recently accepted a premed scholarship to New York University and was contemplating the end of her career as a singer. Having recorded two songs, she thanked the technicians and musicians, hoping not to have to record the third song her father had in mind, an old tune from 1923. After a false start, she sang it in one take. When Dick Clark played "Who's Sorry Now?" on American Bandstand, he told the show's eight million viewers that Connie Francis was "a new girl singer that is heading straight for the number one spot." "Who's Sorry Now?" was the first of Francis' long string of worldwide hits. By 1967, she had sold 35 million worldwide, with 35 U.S. Top 40 hits and several number ones ("Everybody's Somebody's Fool," "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own," "Don't Break the Heart That Loves You," and "Stupid Cupid") to her credit. Released in 1963, "In the Summer of His Years," written as a tribute to the assassinated John F. Kennedy, remains one of the earliest known charity records, with proceeds donated to dependents of the policemen shot during the incident. Francis had an affinity for languages and was one of the first pop singers to record her songs in other languages; 1961's title song from the movie Where the Boys Are was recorded in six languages. She starred in four (nondescript) films, sang voice-overs in movies for actresses who could not sing, and was a guest star on innumerable TV shows. Music critics who didn't take kindly to Francis' pop music years were eventually won over by her versatility. Her Italian and Jewish albums transformed Francis from a teenage idol to a mature performer at leading nightspots around the world. She has also had a long history being a composer's first choice to interpret songs that went on to become major hits for other artists, including "Somewhere My Love," "Strangers in the Night," "Angel in the Morning," and "When Will the Apples Fall." While the recording of "Who's Sorry Now?" in 1957 was planned to be her final session for MGM, she actually ended that relationship in 1969, choosing not to renew her contract when MGM was taken over by Polydor. She opted instead for domestic life with her third husband. Francis didn't return to the recording studio until 1973 when the writers of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon," longtime friends, wrote "The Answer" especially for Francis. In 1974, her husband encouraged her to return to the stage, with disastrous consequences. After her third performance, she was raped at the hotel where she was staying. Ultimately, this incident contributed to the end of her marriage. During 1975, nasal surgery temporarily robbed her of her voice. She was on the comeback trail in 1981 when her brother, George, was brutally murdered. It took seven years to determine that through all of those events, she was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She finally made her return to the stage and recording in 1989, and Connie Francis has continued to sing to sold-out audiences into the new millennium. Bishop François de Laval, Biography
We have to realize that he spent fifty years in Quebec, overcoming
countless difficuities, while conserving an impressive serenity. His
life is a real epic, like that of numerous founders of the Canadian
Church. He was a friend of all, noble and humble, Indian and French, of
the governors, of the founders of Montreal and Three Rivers.
A DESCENDANT 0F THE HIGH FRENCH NOBILITY
His parents are both from high nobility. His father is a descendant of the baron of Montmorency who was a contemporary of Hugues Capet, king of France, founder of the Capetian dynasty. Francois has six brothers and sisters; at age 24, he is ordained a priest on May lst, 1647, 350 years ago. He is ordained a bishop on the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1658. He is preparing to leave for a mission to Tonkin when he learns that the Jesuits of Quebec are calling for him. King Louis XIV transmits their request to the Holy Father, writing: "We wish the Sieur De Laval, bishop of Pétrée, to be recognized by all our subjects in New France, to perform there the episcopal duties."
Quarrels break out in the local clergy over this appointment; but the queen mnother, Anne of Austria, ratifies everything by writing to the Quebec Governor: "It is my firm intention and that of my son that Bishop de Laval, and no other, should exercise the episcopal jurisdiction." Thus she was obliging the governor of Quebec to send to France whoever should want to counter his authority. Bishop De Laval settles his family affairs, renounces his seigniory and his birthright in favor of his younger brother, Jean-Louis. His father has died already and his mother will die during the year of his departure.
QUEBEC, STORMY CITY
The ship, sailing frorn La Rochelle on Easter Day 1659, arrived in Québec on June 16, 1659. The whole colony is on the wharf, together with numerous aborigenes; the city resounds with shouts, the sound of bells, and the noise of the fort cannons. On the same day, Bishop de Laval baptizes a young Huron and walks over to the cabin of a dying man to give him the last sacraments. Later, he will baptize the Iroquois chief, Garagonthie. Having barely ianded in Québec, the bishop observes the disastrous effects of aicohol which the Indians consume abundantly. These aicoholic beverages are imported from France and exchanged for furs. Bishop de Laval wants to stop this: the traders are furlous and set the peopie against the bishop. Unable to restrict or stop this trade which 15 the cause of fights or even murders, of division among familles, Bishop de Laval strikes a hard blow: he excominunicates the Catholics wbo will continue this commerce. He will have to face the anger of the notables and even certain governors. Marie de l'Incarnation writes to her son, Dom Claude Martin, benedictine, "Our bishop is very zealous for what he believes will increase the giory of God. He thought he wouid die of pain on this matter, and he can be seen withering away." This struggle against the sale of spirits will last twenty years! At last, in 1679, Bishop de Laval obtains from King Louis XIV to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to Indians. A long and exhausting battle has ended... for a time. In Québec City, winters are very cold. Large stoves stand in the middle of churches and several of the latter will be destroyed by fire! Twice the new basilica of Québec will burn... but the courageous bishop builds a new one, aided by volunteer settlers.
THE FATHER 0F THE COUNTRY
Bishop de Laval works above ail on organizing religious life and building schools. His immense diocese extends from Québec Gity to Acadia and to Louisiana, then a French colony. He undertakes several exhausting visits, for he believes in building the Canadian Church on the basis of the strength and unity of parish, school and family life. His Québec Seminary was the first to train and educate our writers, thinkers, political and religlous leaders who will fight for the rights of the fatherland after the English conquest. After 1760, parishes stood firm, tightly gathered around their pastors, as the bishop of Québec had taught them. He was well deserving of his title of "Father of the Gountry'1.
A MYSTIC WITH A MISSIONARY HEART
Brother Houssart, after the death of Bishop de Laval on March 6, 1708, revealed the high spiritual and mystical value of the one he served by pubiishing a memoir. During the last years of his life, the bishop of Québec had become severely handicapped physicaiiy, on account of his missionary journeys: "He was seen going through long plilgrinages on foot, without money, begging for his bread and hiding his name. He wanted to imitate the first apostles of the eariy Church, and he thanked God that he had something to suffer for his love." The valiant bishop, in winter as well as in summer, relentiessly travels through his immense vicariate. On the St. Lawrence river, riding a frail canoe, he paddies himself; in winter, his "chapel" on his back, he ventures on snowshoes as far as Montreal, often caught by winds and snow. He visits the sick of the Hotel-Dieu of Québec and looks after them, encourages them and assists them in their last hours. This descendant of the first Baron of France walks alone to the Basilica every morning at 4:00 A.M. Like a sacristan, he opens the doors, rings the bell and prepares the altar to celebrate the mass as early as 4:30 A.M. It was said that he celebrated this mass like an angel! And in bis bare room at the Seminary, he sieeps on boards, putting under his bed the straw mattress that Brother Houssart lent him.
A GREAT SAINT
At bis death, Bishop de Laval had nothing left. He had given everything to the poor. Pope John Paul Il beatified him in 1980, based on the sizeable file of miracles and favors obtained through his intercession. The bishop of New France was a great saint to whom we can still pray in these days when "bis country" is still in danger.

REAL GIGUERE-biography
Father of actor Sylvain Giguère, Réal Giguère hosted many talk shows and games on TVA network. He also wrote T. V. Series: "Dominique" (as Pierre Lefebvre), "Métro, boulot, dodo" and "L'or du temps". Giguère has also been seen as an actor in "Caïn" and in "La Cage aux folles", played in Montreal in 1981. He even recorded a french version of "Big Bad John" in the early 60s.
